The intent of our PE curriculum, at Roscoe Primary is to deliver a high- quality curriculum which is accessible to all that will maximise the development of every child’s ability and achievement in the area of PE. It is our aim for every child to succeed and achieve their potential as well as increasing their knowledge on what it means and why it is important to lead a physically active lifestyle. We are passionate about the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equality of play to embed life-long values which will benefit our children now and in the future.
Our clear and comprehensive PE programme allows for children to study four areas of sport. These include: Gymnastics, Athletics, Games and Dance. Within PE lessons, children will adopt many different roles such as a performer, coach, umpire and leader and explore many different indoor and outdoor activities. During the school year inter-form events will take place where children will have access to competing against children from other year groups. We have an annual sports day where pupils have the chance to compete as individuals using ability grouping to ensure children have the opportunity to complete on an ability level. This builds a level of resilience and encourages our children to become reflective on their performance. Displays in school celebrate PE and inform children of key vocabulary. The teaching and learning of healthy life styles is planned explicitly within each year group as part of the PE curriculum, making links with other subjects including Science, PSHE and Maths. This is also echoed during health and wellbeing week, where pupils spend the whole week learning how to live a healthy lifestyle, benefitting them in the present and the future.
We ensure our PE curriculum is inclusive, progressive and that children are given opportunities to develop fundamental skills that they can apply to a variety of sports and activities. Children understand what it means to have a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise, not only for the physical benefits but for their emotional wellbeing. We aim to help children enjoy PE and develop a love of sporting activities that they can pursue beyond Primary school. Year 6 children leave Roscoe Primary able to swim 25 metres competently and have the ability to self-rescue whilst in the water.
