English at Roscoe

At Roscoe Primary School, we believe that literacy and communication are key life skills that open up a world of opportunity for our children. Therefore, we believe that it is our role as educators to provide our children with this key to the world, through our broad and rich curriculum. We aim high for all our children and intend to develop the skills and knowledge that will enable them to communicate effectively and creatively within the world at large. We want our children to see no limits to what they can achieve within and beyond the classroom. Through a love of reading that is shared across our school, we strive to ensure all children enjoy and appreciate literature and its rich variety. We intend to equip all pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.

Here at Roscoe, our curriculum drivers, which are at the centre of everything we do, are our foundations for learning and key focuses. We believe that children need to understand their place in the world which is the focus of our ‘This Is Me’ Autumn term driver. We also believe that children need to have high aspirations to achieve, hence our Spring ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’ driver and finally, we believe that children need to broaden their horizons and look past their own lives and environment. Therefore, our Summer driver is called ‘Above Us Only Sky’.

This Is Me

For centuries, words have been our most powerful tool in helping generations recognise their past, to help understand their present in order to better inform their future. At Roscoe Primary, we share this love of vocabulary and the magic of words. Through reading a range of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and traditional tales, our children are immersed in a breadth of vocabulary to help them explore their place in the local community, their nation and the world.

Everybody Wants To Rule The World

Through rich stories, pupils meet significant people (from the past and present), who have left an everlasting impact on our world. By introducing pupils to these figures within English lessons, or other subjects across the curriculum and story time, important themes, values and lessons are shared. Reading inspirational stories, begins to open our minds to the possibilities of our future and allow us to become aspirational beyond our wildest dreams.

Above Us Only Sky

The written world takes us places beyond our imaginations. It is an area where our dreams can take hold and transport us to different cities, countries or realms. Through a variety of carefully chosen books, children at New Park are introduced to places beyond the school gates and meet people from the past and around the world. By putting the stories into context, we bring to life the sense of curiosity, exploration, and discovery and, in turn, evoke these ambitions in our children.
