PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE)

We are committed to delivering a high-quality PE curriculum that is accessible to all children, enabling every child to succeed and achieve their potential. Our core purpose is to increase our children’s knowledge of what it means to lead a physically active lifestyle and the importance of doing so for their long-term health and well-being.

We are passionate about teaching children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, fostering teamwork, fairness, and equality of play. These are life-long values that will benefit our children now and well into the future. We believe that the achievements children make through Physical Education actively promotes a desire to excel in other areas of our curriculum. Through discussion and feedback, children gain a deep understanding of how their choices can help them reach their full potential, increasing the opportunities available to them. Our PE curriculum uniquely allows all children to access our curriculum drivers, reinforcing our school values.

Purpose of Study

Our high-quality, clear, and comprehensive Physical Education curriculum inspires all children to enjoy, succeed, and excel in both competitive and non-competitive sport. Children are given diverse opportunities to adopt many different roles, such as performers, coaches, umpires, and leaders, and to explore a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities.

Throughout the school year, inter-form events take place, allowing children to engage in various competitive sports and activities. We also host an annual Sports Day where children have the chance to compete as individuals, with every child celebrated and receiving an award. Such events build resilience and encourage our children to reflect on their performances, while also embedding crucial values like fairness and respect.

We proudly work closely with the Liverpool Football CLub Foundation, who assist in delivering high-quality physical education to our children. Furthermore, we partner with Pro-Skills to provide additional sports coaching during lunchtimes, significantly enhancing our PE curriculum offer.

Aims and targets

Aims

The National Curriculum for Physical Education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities.
  • Lead healthy, active lives.

Attainment Targets

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply, and understand the matters, skills, and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.

SUbject content

Subject Content: Key Stage 1

Pupils will develop fundamental movement skills, becoming increasingly competent and confident. They will access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance, and coordination, both individually and with others. They will also engage in competitive (against self and others) and co-operative physical activities in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

Pupils will be taught to:

  • Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing, and catching, as well as developing balance, agility, and co-ordination, applying these in a range of activities.
  • Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.
  • Perform dances using simple movement patterns.

Subject Content: Key Stage 2

Pupils will continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They will enjoy communicating, collaborating, and competing with each other. They will develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports, and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

Pupils will be taught to:

  • Use running, jumping, throwing, and catching in isolation and in combination.
  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate (e.g., badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, and tennis), and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
  • Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control, and balance (e.g., through athletics and gymnastics).
  • Perform dances using a range of movement patterns.
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.
  • Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

SWimming and water safety

All schools must provide swimming instruction in either Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2. At Roscoe Primary, pupils are taught to:

  • Swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
  • Use a range of strokes effectively (e.g., front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke).
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
