Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS): Igniting a Love for Learning
At Roscoe Primary School, we believe that the Early Years are the cornerstone of a child's educational journey. Our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum is designed to be a vibrant, supportive, and joyful beginning, laying the essential foundations for future success. We are deeply committed to working in close partnership with parents and carers to nurture independent, happy learners who thrive in school and reach their unique potential.
Our Intent: Building Confident, Capable Learners
From the moment children join our EYFS, our intent is clear: to foster comprehensive development – physically, verbally, cognitively, and emotionally – while instilling a profound and positive attitude towards school and lifelong learning.
We meticulously consider the individual starting points and needs of every child at Roscoe. Our goal is to provide exceptional opportunities and experiences that empower all children to make outstanding progress. We ensure every child accesses a broad, balanced, and carefully differentiated curriculum, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences they will encounter both now and in the future.
By focusing on each child as an individual, embracing their personal interests, and responding to their unique needs, we thoughtfully plan and provide rich learning opportunities throughout our EYFS curriculum. This approach ensures their continuous learning and development, perfectly aligned with their next steps. We skilfully utilise both our stimulating indoor and inspiring outdoor environments to enhance learning, preparing children to confidently achieve the Early Learning Goals by the end of Foundation Stage and to ensure remarkable progress from their starting points.
Implementation
A Rich & Responsive Learning Journey
Our EYFS curriculum strictly follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, which is guided by four overriding, fundamental principles:
- Unique Child: We celebrate that every child is a unique individual, constantly learning, resilient, capable, confident, and self-assured.
- Positive Relationships: Children flourish and become strong, independent learners through nurturing, positive relationships with adults and peers.
- Enabling Environments: We provide rich and stimulating environments where children learn and develop exceptionally well, with experiences that truly respond to their individual needs, fostered by a strong partnership between practitioners and parents/carers.
- Learning and Development: We recognise that children develop and learn in diverse ways and at varying paces. Our framework comprehensively covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.
Our curriculum offers a dynamic blend of play-based and experiential learning, combined with carefully structured, focused teaching of basic skills. This ensures children make rapid progress and are well-prepared for their transition to Year 1. Children in both Nursery and Reception benefit from abundant opportunities accessible within our vibrant indoor and expansive outdoor provisions. They engage in a mix of planned, purposeful activities, as well as exciting self-initiated and free-flow exploration.
The rich learning experiences within our Early Years are strategically linked to the seven areas of learning and development within the EYFS framework. These areas are thoughtfully divided into three Prime Areas and four Specific Areas.
The Three Prime Areas
These are fundamental and are considered most essential for the healthy development and future learning of our children:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development: We help children develop a positive sense of themselves and others, form strong, positive relationships, and cultivate respect. They learn vital social skills, how to understand and manage their feelings, behave appropriately in groups, and build confidence in their own abilities.
- Communication and Language: We immerse children in a rich language environment, fostering their confidence and skills in expressing themselves effectively, and enabling them to speak and listen attentively in a wide range of situations.
- Physical Development: We provide ample opportunities for young children to be active and interactive, developing their coordination, control, and movement. Crucially, children also learn the importance of physical activity and how to make healthy choices regarding food.
The Four Specific Areas
As children grow and progress in the Prime Areas, this naturally supports their development in these four specific areas:
- Literacy: Our early literacy teaching encourages children to confidently link sounds and letters, empowering them to begin reading and writing. Children explore a wide range of engaging reading materials (books, poems, and other written forms) to ignite and sustain their interest.
- Mathematics: Through engaging opportunities, children develop and enhance their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, solving simple addition and subtraction problems, identifying and representing patterns, and describing shapes, spaces, and measures.
- Understanding the World: We guide children to make sense of their physical world and their community through exciting opportunities to explore, observe, and discover more about people, places, technology, and the environment around them.
- Expressive Arts and Design: We enable children to explore and play freely with a wide range of media and materials. We provide abundant opportunities and encouragement for them to share their unique thoughts, ideas, and feelings through diverse activities in art, music, movement, dance, imaginative role-play, and design and technology.
