Science at Roscoe

On Wednesday, we were thrilled to take twelve of our children to the Liverpool Life Sciences UTC. They were all selected as finalists in the Northern Schools Trust Science Solution Competition. Having thought of a problem we face every day, they came up with a solution and presented their ideas to a panel of judges. Special congratulations to John who won the Year 5/6 category and Nellie who won Reception - Year 4 category.

A special recognition award was presented to our reception class for the kindest idea. Huge congratulations to all the children who represented our school. More science news! Three of our Year 6 pupils have been shortlisted for the National Business of Science Innovation Awards and a further six pupils have been highly commended! This is amazing.

Larkhill Gardens

Year 1 had a lovely morning in the ducky today. They have been learning about seasonal changes in geography and science lessons, and it was lovely to spot signs of spring whilst on their walk. The children were very excited to see the baby chicks and even an egg!

Early Years Ducklings

Nursery & reception are hatching their very own ducklings! There has been no movement, but we expect some chicks to emerge next week. They are all very egg-cited to meet their furry friends.

Weekly Attendance

Our whole attendance this week is on the rise and this week we are at 95%. We are still not at our target of 97% but we are moving in the right direction. Keeping up good attendance during the Summer term is important to ensure no learning is lost as we start to prepare children for the next school year. At Roscoe Primary, we’re here to support all families in making attendance a priority. If there are any challenges, please contact our school office and ask to speak to one of our attendance team.

Attendance counts! Attend today, achieve tomorrow. Our overall percentage this week was 95%, which is an increase from last week. Let's hope that by working together we can get to our target of 97%.

Attendance Expectations

As a school, we aspire to high standards of attendance from all pupils and parents/carers. We strive to build a culture where all can and want to be in school and be ready to learn. We expect, at least, 97% attendance for all our pupils. The law entitles every child of compulsory school age to an efficient, full-time education. It is the legal responsibility of every parent/carer to make sure that their child receives that education.

Good attendance is a learnt behaviour, so it is important to develop good patterns of attendance from the outset.

The Department for Education expects schools to monitor and analyse weekly attendance patterns and trends in order to intervene and support where attendance does not meet the required level.

Daily: Our school day starts at 8:45am. If your child has not arrived at school and there is no reason provided for the absence, then you will receive a call from our attendance officer. If the absence continues without explanation, following our safeguarding guidelines, further contact will be made in the form of a ‘Safe and Well’ check at your home address. If no reason can be provided for your child’s absence, the absence will be recorded as unauthorised. Unauthorised absences may lead to enforcement action by the local authority’s Education Welfare Officer.

Weekly: As a school, we systematically analyse school attendance data to identify pupils that may need support. Where we begin to have concerns about a child’s attendance, we will initiate school-led support in the first instance. When a pattern of poor attendance is spotted, school will agree how all partners can work together to resolve them. Good attendance is essential for children to achieve well academically and for their wider wellbeing. You are invited to discuss any possible barriers and the school will make an offer of support. Hopefully this will positively impact attendance and no further interventions will be needed.

If school-led support is not working, or parents and carers are not engaging, a referral will be completed to the Local Authority Educational Welfare Officer who will implement an Attendance Action Plan which they will monitor alongside school to improve the child’s attendance. If no improvement is seen, legal action, by the Local Authority may be taken at this stage.

Important notes: For any leave of absence, parents/carers are required to complete a request form, available from the School Office. School can only grant a leave of absence in exceptional circumstances. Any unauthorised absences will be referred to the Local Authority Educational Welfare Officer.

Attendance Reminders for Parents/Carers

1. Absence

It is a parent/carer’s responsibility to inform school if your son/daughter will be absent. Please do this before 9:00am where possible. Call our school office and leave a voicemail with details of your child’s absence. 0151 226 1536

2. Term-time holiday

Any term-time holidays will incur a fine. We request holidays are taken outside term-time.

3. Regular absence from school

If your son/daughter is regularly absent from school, we will invite you into school for a meeting to see if there’s any support we can offer to help improve your child’s attendance.

  • Too many unauthorised absences could result in a fine and a referral to the Education Welfare Officer.
  • If your son/daughter is absent due to illness, however, if we suspect they are well enough to attend school, their absence will be unauthorised.

4. Medical Appointments

If your son/daughter has a medical appointment, please attempt to make all appointments outside the school day. If this is not possible, we request your child attends school before and after the appointment.

5. Aiming for 97% and above

We are aiming for 97% or above attendance. This ensures your son/daughter has the best opportunity to reach their full potential.
